X11 keyboard (auto) configuration

Hi List..

Wouldnt it be clever if starting X11 would take over the keyboard
configuration of the operating system?
or at least have a menu to configure it. Going through houndrets of
config files to find out where the heck to change to the local keyboard
(I'm using swiss german keyboard) is not very userfriendly.
