Ok, stop right there.
when you ssh (on the client) to and server you create a "tunnel" that
will forward data on some port on the server to a port on the client.

typically, what happens is that port 6010 (or X display 10) on the
server gets forwarded to port 6000 (or X display 0) on the client.

if your ssh client set up the tunnel then it shoul also have set up
you DISPLAY environement.  Try the -X option to ssh to turn this on.

this is an SSH FAQ so you should be able to google any more help.
