Ssh and remote display tunelling

  • Subject: Ssh and remote display tunelling

Sorry for the dumb question, I don't know very much about x11. If there is a
better forum to get these kind of answers, let me know. I tried to look for
archives and it seems there is none for now.

I am running X.2.3 on an iBook 700. I want to get an xterm of my remote
university to open on my iBook. The analysts out there tell me I need to
activate ssh tunneling. Is it activated in apple's x11 ?

If so, here is what I do:
1- Start x11
2- from x11 xterm, connect via ssh to my remore server (solaris 8)
3- then, do: remote solaris 8 prompt:>setenv DISPLAY "<my IP>:0.0"
4- then, do: remote solaris 8 prompt:>xterm &
5- remote solaris 8 prompt:> xterm Xt error: Can't open display: <my IP>:0.0

Am I doing someting wrong or I don't have the nessessary
software/connection/router( I am connected Cable-DSL with a router) ?

Thanks for your help.

BTW, when you open 2 xterm in x11, there is now way to differenciate them in
the window menu. Is it a known bug ? Mabe ther should be a number besides
the xterm (ex.: xterm 1 ,etc.)

Francis
