Please see the Emacs FAQ, C-h F in GNU Emacs. (Probably the same if
you use XEmacs.) "Why does the <Backspace> key invoke help?"

The most common answer is that you have to tweak the terminal
emulation program, i.e. xterm. They have a set of diffrent approaches
in the FAQ.
