Backspace in emacs, Option as Meta in Emacs

Ok,
I've lurked, I've asked questions, I've checked the archive and still
can't figure out why Backspace works ok in xterm but sends a Control-H
and calls up the help in emacs.
Do I have to modify emacs to remap the Backspace key to the command or
is the key itself wrong?
How do I make the option key, act as the ESC (meta) key?
This all works in Apple's Terminal Program. . .
Still trying to learn X.
