Hi,
I've a few bugs and feature requests for the X11 for Mac OS X Preview
(I'm using 0.1 on 10.2.3)... sorry if these have already been done to
death but I've been in hibernation & have only just found out about
this list...
Bugs:
* The 'Applications' menu doesn't honour the $PATH env variable, so for
instance I installed gimp using fink, which has put it in /sw/bin. I
then add /sw/bin to my path, and typing "gimp" at the command line (eg.
in an xterm) works fine. In the Applications menu however, if you add
<Name>Gimp <Command>gimp then it doesn't work (it just does nothing).
You have to type <Name>Gimp <Command>/sw/bin/gimp for it to work.
* If in the Applications menu I enter a command with parameters, it
does nothing, eg. if I have 'ls -al', it does nothing. I wondered if
this was because the full path of 'ls' wasn't given, so I put in the
<command> part '/bin/ls -al', and also tried '/bin/ls -al /' (i.e. with
a place that I want listed... not incredibly useful I know but I was
trying to debug!), but all 3 variations result in nothing (visibly)
happening when I select the menu item.
* Under non- quartz-wm window managers (eg. Sawfish), there seems to be
a bug with the Mac OS X menubar & X11's coordinate system... X11
doesn't honour the fact that the menubar is there when it positions
windows, resulting in window titlebars being behind the Mac OS X
menubar. Because X11 windows (under 'normal' X11 window managers, at
least) are only movable from the titlebar (all other edges are used for
resizing, not moving), this means you can't move the window so that its
titlebar is visible. Strangely though, when you hover above the
menubar, you still get the tooltip for the window's titlebar (even
though you can't see it or click on it).
Feature requests:
* It'd be nice to be able to do fullscreen, even if it's a single
OpenGL texture (for Quartz Extreme purposes), so that we can have the
GNOME / KDE docks etc.
* It'd be nice if the 'Customise Application Menu' screen let you
browse for an app, rather than type it in.
* Customisable keys for emulating 3 button mice would be nice.
Finally, is there any official word on whether the final version will
be free or not? I can't believe Apple would charge for something which
is so heavily based on XFree86 (and freely available in the form of
XDarwin), not least as most people who need to use X11 would no doubt
settle for XDarwin if X11 for Mac OS X were commercial, but it'd be
nice to know one way or the other.
Cheers,
Ken
