Finally, is there any official word on whether the final version will be free or not? I can't believe Apple would charge for something which is so heavily based on XFree86 (and freely available in the form of XDarwin), not least as most people who need to use X11 would no doubt settle for XDarwin if X11 for Mac OS X were commercial, but it'd be nice to know one way or the other.

I know I've heard this argument before... I just can't recall where... golly, gosh, gee...

answer: the whole point of Apple's release of X11 is to make it free.

Until just recently, XFree86 with HW OpenGL was free on every platform but Mac.
Tenon was driving people away with their criminal racketeering approach
to keeping the Mac the only platform where HW OpenGL on XFree86 was payware.
They used some "unknown means" to prevent XonX from releasing the enabling code
while they used XonX's code instead of their own to enable it in XTools.

Apple released it to make Hardware OpenGL Support free for Mac OS X users...
so it's payware if you consider that you have to pay for Mac OS X.
"X11 For Mac OS X" doesn't work without Aqua and Apple's OpenGL
so "Darwin-only" users are excluded by definition from using this release.

Apple honestly has no interest in the X Window Server,
outside of restoring parity to the Mac market (saving us from a bully).
They're using NeXT's window server (now called Aqua) instead of X11,
custom-modified to serve Carbon, Java, and Classic windows along with Cocoa.
X11 is a distraction for Apple, but Tenon's illegal bullying had to be stopped.

Apple had to go to this special effort which doesn't benefit them at all to give away something that is intended to be free in the first place to stop a bully who was making it payware only in our market.

I use the same comparisons again...
Would it be okay if only Jews had to pay? NO.
What if it was payware only for Black people? Is that okay? NO.

We were held hostage by Tenon and Apple freed us by giving us our civil rights,
breaking through the artificial barrier Tenon built with criminal racketeering.
Nobody could get a straight answer out of XonX about Tenon so Apple released it,
effectively ending Tenon's criminal racketeering by providing a free source.

Blacks had the right to vote but White Southerner Bullies refused to let them.
They blocked voting booths with artificial barriers like illegal poll taxes.
The National Guard had to force open the doors to equality with guns.

FREE AT LAST! FREE AT LAST! WOZ ALMIGHTY, WE ARE FREE AT LAST!

Hundalasiliah!

Tenon, what's happenin'?
What color is your money today?
