Most multi-button mice will report the buttons in order without
special drivers (usually left, right, middle for buttons 1, 2, and 3
respectively). The drivers may try and out think you mapping the
middle button to something "more" useful like double click or such.
The latest Logitech allow (via advanced button setting) you to map
any button to be any HID button (3 is the one you want to correspond
to the middle button). The latest MS driver I believe do not do this
yet and you can get the correct middle button without any software
but not with their software installed.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for this tip. The M$ configuration panel defaults the wheel
button to Autoscroll. It can be changed to many things
(double-click, triple-click, secondary click, etc.) but not to
"button 3".

I had no problems with a logitech scroll mouse - I hadn't bothered
to download the osx driver for it - it just worked straight away out
of the box. Perhaps the new driver was confusing X and that's why
certain folk were having difficulty pasting?
