Starting X Windows

Hi I am new to this list and hopefuly have a simple question. When I start
X11 and type in the line startx I get an error like this:
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
        If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
        and start again.

   OsVendorFatalError
   AbortDDX
Quitting XDarwin...

What Do I need to do to get to the X windows GUI?
