No, that is incorrect. If you click on the X11 icon, bring up an xterm
window within X11 and then type startx, you will get this error. This is
because you are trying to start X11 from within X11. X11 is already started
and so there is no need to do this. Once you have clicked on the X11 icon,
X11 is started and all you need to do from there is run your X apps.

The following errors strongly suggest that you're running BOTH XDarwin and
X11. More specifically, I tried to start XDarwin when X11, or some other X
server was running. What did you want to do?
