Are you sure you installed it via fink and not by downloading it from
somewhere else, like the XDarwin's site? Did you remember to use sudo?
What did which website tell you to write? What where the errormessages
in detail?

What does "which startx" at the prompt give? What does "sudo fink list
| grep xfree86" give? All packages with "(i)" or "i" in front are
installed.
Please retry and post the output to the fink lists, e.g. fink-user, on
sourceforge (I don't know if you have to surscribe first or not,
probably not).
This is probably more a Fink issue then an Apple X11.
Good luck.
