Joseph is correct if I am not mistaken. There was an issue with 10.2.x
(don't remember the specific build) the would cause a kernel panic if
the keys were remapped by certain third party keyboard mapping
applications.

Hi,
I have been following the Dang .xinitrc thread of and would really
like
to find your wrapper script that you put on the mailing list but have
been unable to locate it.
I have been messing around with emacs for years and really expect to
break a finger or two if I can't change caps-lock to control. Putting
xmodmap in a .xinitrc doesn't work.
As far as I know, it is impossible to remap the caps lock key on a
Macintosh keyboard due to hardware reasons. Those of us who live in
Emacs just have to suffer, or buy alternative keyboards that do
support such remapping (e.g., Kenesis and, hopefully, Adesso, given it
is what I'm trying next).
I have also noticed that the Apple X server does not differentiate
between left and right modifiers. E.g., if I press my right control
key, xev reports keycode 67, keysym CONTROL_L. Remapping CONTROL_L to
CAPS_LOCK using the standard method makes both control keys act as
caps lock, and caps lock is reported by xev as being CONTROL_L, but no
X application ever sees a key event generated by the remapped caps
lock key. It is quite strange.
For consistency I want to start X11 from the icon and use the
Applications menu.
I would be very thankful for a copy of your wrapper script to figure
out
where to put the xmodmap.
If anyone suceeds in remapping the control key to caps lock, and helps
me do the same, I will personally send them a case of beer (or the
equivalent cash).
