Wild guess, but I spent a couple of maddening hours yesterday getting my
keys set up for emacs and xterm. You might add this to your .Xdefaults if
it isn't there already:
XTerm*VT100.metaSendsEscape: True
I also had to have this in .xinitrc to make the US "delete" key work as
backspace in emacs; without this, backspace is indistinguishable from c-h
within emacs (but not the shell):
xmodmap -e "keysym BackSpace = Delete"
My setup does (finally) work. I use alt/option as meta, though.
