AFAIK, OS X provides minimal hardware graphics acceleration support on
the Beige G3s with the Rage Pro chipsets.  I'm not sure about the early
iMacs or iBooks.  But for the all PowerBooks before Pismo, this is true
(that there's *no* hardware graphics acceleration support).
