I can't say, from recent experience, how it compares to xterm, but
Terminal.app has rather unreliable terminal emulation compared to a
number of the OS 9 and below terminal emulators: Better Telnet, Nifty
Telnet with ssh, and MacSSH, all worked better than Terminal.app
with the third-party Unix boxes I've had to connect to: RedHat
Linux, HP-UX, and Solaris, running applications like tcsh, emacs,
vi, mutt, and elm.
The potential for better integration with ssh-agent is the main
reason I'm using Terminal, not any love for the emulation. I don't
know which is more faithful to the ANSI specs and/or real VTxxx
terminals, but Terminal doesn't interoperate well with the stuff I
use. It seems like the emulation and the application get out of sync
from time to time; rather more frequently than with others.
I've had adequate results with xterms in the past, but I've seldom
had a production environment in which to run them (with Macs on my
desk since the SE/30). I'm just hopeful xterms will work better
because they have had a larger user base, and a longer time time
span to debug them against the applications I use.
