TERM conflict with AppleScript

Working last night with geometry problems, which I recently got some help on here, I discovered that an AppleScript of mine has stopped working when executed as a startup item.
The message window says: TERM: Undefined variable. Edit or Exit.
Now the three line script doesn't explicitly use TERM
:
tell application "Finder"
do shell script "/Users/doug/bin/MountEm"
end tell
and the first line in MountEm does an echo to a log file that doesn't appear. But $TERM is used by X11 and AppleScript probably uses the Terminal application (TERM?) to handle do shell script. Can X11 usage possibly interfere with AppleScript after a logout and login to OS neXt (Not a login to UNIX via Terminal or X11.) X11 has been installed for a couple of weeks and I'm just getting around to working with it and messing with .xinitrc. Is there some system-wide environment.plist which is depending on a TERM environment variable that now says "xterm" instead of "Terminal"?

Applescript syntax is like English spelling:
Roughly, but not thoroughly, thought through.
