I'm also a newbie on OSX and made hard work to find out how to setup a
new
keyboard on X11 :
I you want so, you have to launch it from a Term window !
The command line is :
/Applications/X11.app/Contents/MacOS/X11 -keymap
/System/Library/Keyboards/Francais.keymapping
Or wathever language you want, the keymaps are in directory :
/System/Library/Keyboards/
Just to clarify: there are national keyboards with no appropriate
keymapping in /System/Library/Keyboards (for example: the ISO Spanish
keyboard, which is included with all Macintosh models sold in Spain
since 1994 or 1995). In these cases, only xmodmap can help. I filed a
bug report about this problem (which affects XDarwin too).
