  I had a problem with this using XDarwin in December of 2001.  To fix it, I
  set the HOSTNAME variable to my desired hostname in /etc/hostconfig.  (It
  was set to -AUTOMATIC-).

  It's worked fine for me for over a year.  I prefer it since I think of my
  machine by it's given name rather than by whatever name maps to the IP
  address DHCP gave me.
