And I got some good answers for which I am grateful. "man 7 X" . . . gees. .
It turns out that a big part of the problem was a known bug in gnumeric which is apparently getting fixed in V 1.1. The other part was that xterm had to be initialized to fall in a populated area of gWorld which required changes in .xinitrc. That was simple once I realized that x,y are in characters and x0,y0 are in pixels.
But. . .
With my four screens, unpopulated by CRT phosphor in the rectangle 0,0 to 1420,380, I think I am losing the option to use the Terminal APPL. I have this menu item which offers xterm or Terminal. Clicking in xterm gives me another xterm window which I don't need but at least does something. Selecting Terminal does nothing and I don't know why. As usual "man Terminal" provides no help .
Is a Terminal window really appearing up near 0,0 where I can't see it? Or do I have a whole lot to learn about the Terminal option offered? Can I somehow execute Terminal with a -geometry option? How can I load terminal from the .xinitrc file?
