I may be wrong here, but I believe X11 uses the system color map,
rather than
its own. You wouldn't be able to change to a map setting which the
system
doesn't support (such as 8bit color) while running rootless under OSX.
Is there any particular reason you are trying to run 8bit color, rather
than 16
or 32?
