You might want to browse the archives of this list. A lot of this has
already been discussed, and you might find a lot of useful information
there.

Some things to look for:
+ xhost vs. xauth.
+ forwarding X11 connections through ssh -X
+ ~/.MacOS/environment.plist
+ XUSERFILESEARCHPATH and XAPPLRESDIR
(Is it just me, or is the web searching of the archives at
http://search.lists.apple.com/ missing the "x11-users" list?)
