I'm trying... Maybe it's my fault, but apparently I'm having a hard time
figure out what exactly you're saying. I think it's because you keep using
the phrase "X11" when you refer to "window managers under X11". I
interpret "X11" as the entire X Window System. Maybe I shouldn't be doing
that...
I'll be honest, I'm not sure what we're debating about. I think we both
agree that the X11 environment should provide the user with all the options
that he might wish to exercize. The choice of window manager should
provide the required consistency as well as the desired customizability.
Further than that, we also agree that Apple's X server should provide for
the ability to interact with it in a number of ways that it does not
currently. It should provide the ability for X windows to be treated all
as one "layer" in the native windowing environment. It should also provide
the ability for X windows to be treated as separate "layers".
I'll go further and say that I think it should also honor "strange"
requests like changing stacking order and warping the mouse. I have seen
some X servers that only support moving top-level windows by the user
directly with the mouse. And they ignore XWarpCursor calls. (I have not
tested these functions with X11.app, so I can't say that there's a problem.
Just a desire for certain functionality.) Ignoring these requests can
break certain applications.
Oh, did you happen to submit a request for the single "layer" idea to
Apple's bug tracking database? It's the best way for them to follow this,
rather than follow our lengthy thread.

That's fair.
