Thanks for all the advice and information. It sounds like Panther may fix this issue, but that everyone (except me) already knew of the issue in Jaguar and X11 0.3. Does anyone have any comments on how XDarwin may handle geometry changes? Due to some of the bugs in X11.app 0.3, I may need to use something else until such time as Panther is available, and I upgrade this system.
I am also starting to notice - as one posting commented - that Jaguar itself may not always handle geometry changes properly. I use this computer on my desk about 2/3 of the time, and go 'wireless' to surf the net and other activities away from my desk during the evening hours. Now, with no X11 apps running, there are a significant number of times that I came back to the desk, plopped the computer down on my iCurve and hooked up the monitor, USB mouse, keyboard, and opened the lid. Boom. In order each running app - all native OS X apps such as Mail, Safari, iChat, iTunes - crash. The OS simply tells me that they 'exited unexpectedly'. This is entirely related to reconnecting the external VGA monitor, which had been connected previously with these same apps running.
I've learned at this point I think that at least in Jaguar, geometry changes on the fly like this are not really stable. I can see it never being an issue for a PowerMac, since you are desk-bound and ALWAYS have the same monitors attached. But with a PowerBook or even an iBook, it seems there are some issues with connecting and disconnecting an external monitor while the system is running.
Thanks again for all the advice and information - at least I know what is happening now!
