PDF files not recogniseable in GIMP under Apple X11

While I can directly load PDF files into GIMP running under OrobooOSX X11, when I try it with Apple X11 the translation is not done. Is there some interpreter library that needs to be linked into Apple X11.
Given that screen dumps are now done as PDF files it seems logical that Apple X11 Gimp should be able to read them!!!
