First - Thanks again to John, Martin and Torrey for helping this dev-dunce
locate the required Xplugin.h, fix the symlink, etc. that were needed to get
a clean build in OSXv10.2.6 of X11v1.0 and XFree86 v4.3.0 from the source in
X11ForMacOSXSource-wwdc.tar.gz
Yesterday I finally saw the fabled X11 About box with the inscription "X11
1.0 - XFree86 4.3.0" on my own TiBook running OSXv10.2.6:) But I had to
crank up another window manager to keep X11.app alive long enough to see
it:(
That's when it finally sunk in -- DUH. It's the proprietary quartz-wm window
manager that is being bundled with the paid Panther upgrade. Of course this
was always possible. I had just thought that Apple would recognize the
benefit of establishing the policy of providing a good quality X11 _and_
quartz-wm combination that leveraged the capabilities of each version of OS
X _starting_ with the current one (i.e. Jaguar). This would have allowed
open source projects to comfortably target X11 & quartz-wm _now_, without
turning their project into a shill for marketing MacOS X upgrades (e.g.
Panther) to their users.
But Apple didn't even release X11 v1.0 with a functioning quartz-wm before
turning it into one of the '100 reasons' to pay for a Panther upgrade
(http://www.apple.com/macosx/panther/ lower right). IMHO linking the use of
quartz-wm (with X11v1.0 & XFree86 v4.3.0) to a paid upgrade of the OS is
making the combination of XDarwin & any _open source_ window manager look
more attractive by the minute. And BTW Apple has promised me _months_ of
minutes to think about this.
FWIW the _only_ reason I run X11R6 is to access & support the development of
_open source_ projects. So choosing to use a _proprietary_ X11R6 - window
manager, which I now know is linked to yearly OS upgrade fees, seems a bit
silly.
