What x?

With X11 (version 0.2) not open, I type in a terminal window: 'startx'; an X Window system opens. It is not X11; it is simply designated 'x' in the menu bar. According to the terminal, it is "XFree86 Version 4.2.1 / X Window System." I have not installed XDarwin on my system (OS 10.2.4). So am I seeing an X Window system already built into the operating system? In any event, what window manager is it using? Can I find out by entering an appropriate command in the X Window? I guess it is twm?
