A colleague has just noticed that when working on Matlab
which is running on a remote Solaris machine the caret symbol
^ is not recognised. So you try and type `x squared' as `x^2' and get
`x2'. Not good!
Does anyone know if this is x11 or matlab? Other applications don't have
this problem such as xmaple.
Thanks
Michael
I just tried this in OroborOSX 8.5 and the caret does display so this
looks more like an x11 bug than Matlab.
Someone on the list recently was having similar (tilde) problems with a
UK keyboard. I think he solved it by switching keyboard mappings as
suggested in the X11 FAQ:
If you wish use the keyboard mappings in /System/Library/Keyboards you
can do so by enabling the following default : " defaults write
com.apple.x11 keymap_file Francais.keymapping " . X11 will pickup the
keyboard mapping when it is restarted.
Worth a try?

You got it. I didn't try the defaults write bit I just selected a US
keyboard instead of the Australian one and restarted x11 and now I
have my carets. A UK keyboard was no good. Not sure what is going on
with this - but its a solution.
Message to watching Apple people: Australians and Brits like carets as well :-)
