gnome-session behaviors

I installed the new beta today, and chose to uncheck the configuration
box when customizing my installation because I wanted all the options
I'd put in my Application menu etc...
I enjoy all the planned improvements, but I have encountered some
strangeness that I don't like...
I've been using ssh -X to login to my RedHat 8.0 machine and have been
running gnome-session to get a full RedHat desktop on my G4. In fact,
I've been so happy with this that I recently ditched the ailing KVM
switch I had between my XP box and RH8 box in favor of controlling them
both from my G4. I've used x11 to access the RH8 box and MS RDC (Remote
Desktop Connection) to access the XP box; I have been able to easily
switch between them (and my apple desktop - or any apple desktops via
ARD) using the dock. Now, though, x11 0.3 exhibits some weird new
behaviors that interfere with this functionality:
1) Elements of the apple desktop are still visible when using the
gnome-session in x11... anything on the OS X desktop, for instance
(though I cannot actually click on mounted disks or whatever without
first hiding x11). Also, any unminimized windows... such as a safari
window, or worse, an MS RDC window will appear 'above' the gnome
desktop, but not 'above' the x11 windows.
2) Elements of x11 (well, the gnome panel to be specific) continue to
show (well, more annoyingly, they continue to be 'on top') when I am
using other apps (such as say, Safari or worse again, MS RDC... the
gnome panel completely covers my start menu unless I hide the gnome
panel.) Note: The gnome panel now also covers x11 windows that would've
gone 'over' the panel in the past... the context menu generated by right
clicking on the panel appears mostly 'behind' the panel!
Effectively, without hiding x11.app, which has always had a funny effect
on minimized x11 windows (namely they appear in a ghostly nonfunctional
form when I return to x11 - until I unminimize them again), I can no
longer switch cleanly between my Apple desktop, my XP desktop, and my
RH8 desktop. (Not to mention the gnome panel is a pain when simply using
x11.)
Is there a way I can control these behaviors in x11? Should I reinstall
0.3 and allow a default configuration? Should I go back to 0.2 to get
the functionality I desire for the time being?
My apologies for my length, and for a lack of technical terminology in
parts here. And thanks in advance to anyone that lends a hand.
