For a newbie this is all confusing starting with OS X, OS X server,
OS X 10.2, X11, X11R6, X11 Darwin, XWindows, I think someone could
have decided on some other letters. There are a few others to choose
from.
yes, thats a bit irritating
mac os x server (first version, nextstep with mac gui, abandoned)
current versions:
mac os x or osx or jaguar or osx 10.2...
mac os x server
x11 for mac os x or "xserver for mac os x". you can either run x11 on
top of the complete mac os x gui (using the quartz (a z, not a x :))
graphic stuff (which use apple x11, xdarwin, xonx) or on top of only
the core-unix-system using the default x11-way. the last thing would be
a x11-implemention similar to the ones on other unix systems.
and than theres xserve, the server hardware for mac os x server :)
so at the end we have an xserver running on mac os x server on an xserve
it has to be read as mac os 10, which includes an x11 implemention and
can be run on an xserve
it even gets worse when we look at version numbering. i think that mac
os x 10.2.4 should be marked as mac os 12.4 or mac os x 2.4.
but thats a bit off topic :)
