If I could run the app in a regular ssh session, I could use Terminal's
scrollbars, etc. When I try this, however, the app complains:
couldn't connect to display ":0" at .../Tk/MainWindow.pm line 55.
The most probable explanation for this is the following: In your
Terminal shell you don't have DISPLAY set at all. When you do your "ssh
-X", the DISPLAY environment variable is not set on the remote machine
either. But on that machine, you have a smart shell startup script that
sets DISPLAY to :0 if it is not yet set.
Solution: Set the DISPLAY environment variable to :0 either by hand or
in your shell startup script (like it is done on your freebsd machine)
before you start your ssh session. Then "ssh -X" will have the effect
which the other answers have explained, namely that the remote machine
sets the DISPLAY automatically to localhost:10.0.
