This note is to document a recent experience installing Open Office Beta for
OSX .
I first tried this on OS X 10.1.5, but I was not able to get the OO
installer to work. For people who are still working with OSX 10.1, there is
good news in that there are two versions of the XFree86 4.2.1.0 patch that I
mention below: one for 10.1, and one for 10.2.
However, as far as Open Office goes, a "showstopper" seems to be be that
required OpenGL support is only provided with OSX 10.2 and Darwin 6.0.2.
Altho' there may still be a work-around to this, the rest of my note
describes my experience with 10.2. .
I installed OS X 10.2, and upgraded to 10.2.4. [Do not even think about
using the UNIX file system, but stick with Mac HPFS]. You seem to also need
Apple's X11 SDK update, and of course the OS X 10.2 Development Tools .
Next, I installed Apple's X11 for OSX Public Beta 3 (which is a version of
XFree86 4.2.1), and it worked fine on its own, but the Open Office starter
app. could not locate XDarwin. In fact, it's properties allow you to
specify either XDarwin or OroBorosX, but I had neither, so I got both, and
indeed I ended up using them both. Not that the version of OroborosX
packaged with Open Office was an old beta (8.2), whereas 8.5 is the latest
release.
After quite a lot of web searching, I was able to find a more recent XFree86
4.2.0, plus XFree86_4.2.1.0 for OSX 10.2, and XFree86_4.2.1.1. I installed
these.
XDarwin still did not seem to want to start right away, and all of sudden my
USB mouse lost power too, which was scary.
These problems righted themselves auto-magically after a system restart, and
I was rapidly able to get Open Office working successfully on OS X 10.2,
together with XDarwin 4.2.1.1 as above, and OroborosX 8.5.
This did take quite a lot of time.
