Ah, so if you weren't running your fink commands from a terminal window,
how were you launching them?
Remember that fink commander is not really a part of fink itself - I'd
recommend using the command line package installation tools; apt-get and
dselect, or fink if you want to install from source.
My experience of third party graphical package managers has never been
very positive, in Debian GNU/Linux, let alone here.
