Karl,
thanks for the reply.
1) I have been regularly visiting TechTip 3444 to hope you (RSINC) have found
some solution (for beta 3).
2) The problem we have is the one related to the color (all image get
squeezed/doubled and color inverted) with beta 2
it seemed OK (after applying the workaround described in Tip 3444)
The comment on the RSINC page regarding beta 3 was put after I reported some
time ago our problem. Since then no news
whatsoever neither from Apple nor from RSI.
Still it is not clear to me : Is this a problem with X11 (Apple) or with IDL
?
To Apple: Is there anybody here reading from Apple which could open a Bug
report or report of any existing related one ?
To RSI : can you figure out some workaround to have IDL working with Beta 3?
To everybody else: can anybody send me beta 2 (silly me i have deleted it)
Kind regards

I was referring to the "known problems" section a little further down the
page. The original poster didn't say much about the problem, and the first
thing that came to mind was the IDLDE problem discussed in this section.
The original poster did say that they did not have a problem with 0.2, so my
guess turns out to be wrong. Sorry about that.

Yes, with some restrictions:
I am aware of two problems with IDL and X11 Beta 3:
1) The IDLDE fork problem discussed in the "Known Problems" section of the
tech tip. Note that this was also a problem in Beta 0.2.
2) Apple added 8-bit PseudoColor visual support in Beta 0.3. There are
apparently some problems with this support when applications mix window
depths. In the IDL world, this can happen when the IDL user application
forces or uses 8-bit pseudocolor support while using Direct Graphics. I've
reported this problem to Apple via their problem reporting system, and as I
understand it, Apple understands the problem and is working on a fix. IDL
users can avoid the problem by not forcing the usage of 8-bit Direct
Graphics windows. The feasibility of avoiding the 8-bit windows depends a
lot on the IDL user application. If the application depends heavily on
using 8-bit windows, this may be difficult. In some cases a user may be
able to use or change the DEVICE command to avoid the problem. OTOH, if the
application works with 8-bit image data, it would take some work to migrate
the app to 24-bit. It is hard to quantify the difficulty with getting
around the problem without knowing the application and/or what the user is
doing. That's why there's no cookbook-style workaround.
