If the perspective of someone who has no previous history with X and no
financial ties to it (ie I don't need it to do my job) would interest
you, here is how I use X on my 10.2.6 G3 pbook:
I've installed lots of free stuff from fink (including tons of x*, g*,
and k* applications) and I use these often:
AbiWord (it boots up much faster than MS Word or OpenOffice, and its
good for simple word processing)
Ethereal (has actually been a nice free tool for troubleshooting and
learning about the network on campus)
GAIM :)
And I use the X11.app Applications menu to launch things such as:
OpenOffice
Python (IDLE)
Cisco's vpnclient
xedit, xterm, and other simple x* g* and k* utilities
In fact, I keep a pretty standard gnome-panel on the desktop in addition
to my dock (I hide both.)
Also, I use ssh -X to access my RedHat server frequently and run a
gnome-panel or gnome-session; It's like sitting at the RH9 box.
(Sometimes I am also using MS RDC to access Win2000/xp/2003 machines and
love being able to use all three environments - OS X, Windows, and Linux
- wirelessly from my laptop.)
I know there are indeed good OS X native apps for most of these uses,
but where personal preferences - or compatibility is concerned, it's
nice to have all the options.
