What do we use X11 for?
Our company sells a GIS (Geographic Information System) and Image
Processing system called TNTmips. When we started this project, we
decided the best way to make it portable was to write it as an X
application.
We then wrote an X Server for Windows and one for Mac and shipped
those versions with our own X server. That way we have one code base
that can be compiled for Mac, Windows, Sun, Linux, SGI, RS6000, etc.
When Mac OS X came out we were very annoyed to discover that an OS
based on Unix and having an X in it's name didn't provide X. Not wanting
to write our own X server again, we started shipping XDarwin and
OroborOSX with the MacOS X version of TNTmips. Now that Apple's
providing an X server too, we've switched to that and it works quite
nicely.
By the way, we still sell our Windows X server (MI/X), but dropped support
for the Mac version because it was for OS9, which we no longer support
In fact, the last release of our TNTmips we "accidentally" shipped only the
OSX versions to all our Mac clients and "forgot" to send them OS9 versions.
Nobody even complained. :-)
