I have noticed some behaviour on my Mac with the regular Apple window
manager (not sure what it's called...Aqua/Quartz/?). As some other
window managers, it doesn't seem to manage windows. If an application
crashes and I can't kill it, I want to get rid of it's window, so I
try to hit the 'minimize' button. On X11 systems, the window will
close, but on Apple's window manager, it won't. It seems like the
windows manage themselves - to some degree at least.
if the application sets it up the right way (which most do), clicking
the close button will send a message to the window telling it to delete
itself. If the application is hung it won't do anything. (and it's not
possible for the wm to notice this after a period of time and
forcefully delete it, since the user may have cancelled the deletion if
e.g. there were unsaved changes in the window)
