I have noticed some behaviour on my Mac with the regular Apple window
manager (not sure what it's called...Aqua/Quartz/?). As some other
window managers, it doesn't seem to manage windows. If an application
crashes and I can't kill it, I want to get rid of it's window, so I
try to hit the 'minimize' button. On X11 systems, the window will
close, but on Apple's window manager, it won't. It seems like the
windows manage themselves - to some degree at least.
if the application sets it up the right way (which most do), clicking
the close button will send a message to the window telling it to delete
itself. If the application is hung it won't do anything. (and it's not
possible for the wm to notice this after a period of time and forcefully
delete it, since the user may have cancelled the deletion if e.g. there
were unsaved changes in the window)
Right. I, er, 'dislike' this behaviour. If I ask the window manager to
close a window, *it* should close it, not the application running in the
window.
(In *my* opinion, that is)
Max.
