xterm colors

Is it possible to configure the source included in
X11ForMacOSXSource-1.0/xc/programs/xterm so that xterm will support more
than 16 ANSI colors?

If so how?  While I can do a simple make of the source, trying to set up
using configure has so far led to problems in main which appear related to
curses or perhaps termcap.

I have 10.3 installed using gcc3.3
