The original poster didn't specify what kind of connection they had to
the Windows computer. It may well have been a file-sharing disk mount
(SMB) connection. I have had trouble with forgetting to disconnect
from a Samba (Windows-like but running on a Sun) server before taking
my Powerbook home. The
I'm not sure whether it is an SMB connection, I press "apple+K" > look
for the local network > found the PC running XP > enter my userid and

Finder and nearly all other programs get very weird and slow because
they are waiting to finish some I/O. The system cannot be shutdown
even from the command line (without using the power button). I found
that the only solution was to drive back to the office and connect to
the network....
Well for now it still doesn't seems to disturb my Finder's performance.
I log off from my account when I unplugged the LAN from my PB, and then
I close the lid and go home. I never switch off my PB. At home when I
re-open the lid, it says that the previous connection is missing and
ask if I want to do disconnect. I click disconnect and I login. It just
worries me to see this alarming message before each login.
I shall try the advise about looking for the PID using ps command and
kill -9. I hope I will work.
