Vim, xterm, and fn keys?

I'm using Jaguar and X11b3, with vim compiled from source. I
generally
keep a number of functions mapped to my function keys for ease of
editing in vim. If I open an xterm on the local machine, none of the
shifted function keys are seen by vim. _Some_ of the unshifted
function
keys are. If I ssh from the local machine to a different machine with
a
vim build, similar behavior results but more of the unshifted function
keys are seen. To clarify, I'm talking about the low numbered keys,
like F4 and F5, and not the stolen-by-Aqua keys like F15.
Could have something to do with the fact that apple uses the function
keys for special purposes on its PowerBooks.
F1 = darken screen
F2 = lighter screen
F3 = mute speakers
F4 = turn speaker volume down
F5 = turn speaker volume up
Regards,
Sven
