Hi. I was just assigned a new powerbook (with 10.2.8) at work and set
out installing X11 beta 3 and many fink packages... all was working well
and I got my KDE launcher (klauncher) set up the way I liked.. and then
the next time I started X11 the launcher was a no go, as are many other
k* apps. The launcher provides no feedback, but if I launch kedit, for
example, I get this error...
There was an error setting up inter-process
Communications for KDE. The message returned
By the system was:
Could not read network connection list.
/Users/admin/.DCOPserver_NMUSD-EdTech-TOSA.local._0
Please check that the "dcopserver" program is running!
Naturally, if I try launching dcopserver, it doesn't fly, and I get this
error:
_KDE_IceTransmkdir: Owner of /tmp/.ICE-unix should be set to root
iceauth: /Users/admin/.ICEauthority not writable, changes will be
ignored
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Authentication Rejected,
reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
and host-based authentication failed
ICE Connection rejected!
DCOPClient::attachInternal. Attach failed Authentication Rejected,
reason : None of the authentication protocols specified are supported
and host-based authentication failed
DCOPServer self-test failed.
ICE Connection rejected!
I tried changing the permissions on .ICEauthority (all the way to 777)
but this generated other errors. I considered changing the owner on the
/tmp/.ICE-unix file from admin (me) to root, but instead set all back
the way it was and decided to post this message.
Help?

Subject: X11 version in Panther
I compiled the X11.app v1 when it was available a while back. When I
upgrade to Panther will the version that ships with it be newer than the
version I compiled? I am mainly interested in whether I will need to
recompile software I use that depends on libraries in the X11
directories. I
had to when I changed from beta 3 to v 1 for one program. I figure the
change from 10.2.8 to 10.3 might necessitate some recompilations also,
not
just X-based programs. 10.1->10.2 certainly did.
