The original X11 emacs runs in a terminal window only. I didn't find
anything to make it open an X window. I then switched to fink Emacs
which runs perfectly and I am using it everyday.
You can try enhanced-carbon-emacs, which comes from CVS and it is newer
than fink emacs, and it has a bunch of features preloaded so that it is
supposedly more usable from the point of view of a mac user. And you
get all the precompiled sources of the enhancements, so that you can
make your fink emacs enhanced as well. And, as the name says, it is not
an X11 application, but a full fledged carbon application.
