I just succeeded in overcoming a related problem by turning off my
firewall. No X-connection with it on. As soon as I turn it off, the
windows from the remote pop up. Now I want to turn the firewall back
on, but with an open port for this connection.
Could anyone please clue me in as to how to find out the port number
used by a particular service? I've checked out Apple's "well
known...ports..." article. I've flushed my ipfw rules. A port scan
with the firewall off still only shows two ports open. Any ideas? If
the firewall is working, what should I open to allow x-connection ?
Thanks,
Tim

and make sure that you're firewall isn't blocking X traffic (turn it
off - in System Preferences / Sharing ) and see if things work then.
If they do, then you can add a new entry to the firewall list for the
X port...
