root is disabled by default, so unless you enabled it, it isn't valid.
As for fink, you can sudo, which asks for your *user* password before
doing anything that need privilege.
In a pinch, you can
sudo -H -s -- --login
which will give you a root shell (that's what I do instead of enabling
root.)
