What do and l and ll normally do? Can't say I've come across them in a
Unix before.

I don't think OSX's BSD-ish ls does color. Sounds like you're used to
Linux which geneally uses gnu fileutils' ls, which under things like
RedHat is aliased to "ls -color" in /etc/profile or similar.
You can install gnu's ls it via fink, compile from the fileutils source or
possibly opendarwin (I don't use the latter myself). Then simply add the
"alias ls=ls -color" to your shell's rc file (.cshrc for the default tcsh
shell under 10.2 - soon to be bash under 10.3 :).
But either way, out of the scope of this mailing list. :)
