What's in your .xinitrc if anything?

I used X11 under Mac OS X 10.3.6 just last week with no problems.

Well, I have located the culprit. In the X11.app's X11 Preferences window there are 3 tabbed panes: Input, Output and Security.

In the Security pane, there are 2 checkboxes: one to Authenticate connections and one to Allow connections from network clients. I was able to access the X11 preferences window even though the console was showing the errors I reported earlier and when X11 was broken, both of these check boxes were selected. I simply unchecked the boxes, shut down X11.app, and restarted. Voila -- no more errors in the console and my xterm came up as expected.

So my immediate problem is solved, but the situation leaves 2 questions in my mind.

1. If the boxes are off by default, how did they get turned on? I certainly haven't opened the X11 preferences settings in months.

2. If the boxes can be/are supposed to be selected, why does selecting them break my X11 startup all of a sudden?

I am on DHCP network in the office and our assigned IPs change frequently. It is likely that this week my machine addresses (for airport and ethernet interfaces) are different than they were last week and if so, with the settings both selected as they were, I can see perhaps how authentication issues may have arisen.

Is this the way Mac OS X and X11 is supposed to work? I have had no trouble, as I have said, with X11 for months and months and this issue hit out of the blue.

Any advice as to what the proper settings should be, and how I might prevent this issue from recurring appreciated.

Jim
