Your suggestion to use "Go to folder" worked, but just barely. I tried
entering the real DVD name ('Power Mac Software'), but I got an error
message, after which I was dumped into a folder where X11User.pkg was one of
the installers. How I got there, I don't know. Anyway, I ran the installer,
and now X11 is in my /Applications/Utilities folder and seems (so far) to
work (at least xterm opens). You just saved me several hours of head
scratching. I never would have thought to look for an invisible folder.
Thanks.
