Is it possible to install both X11.app and the latest build from
XFree86 on the same machine and switch between them?
Yes. The safest way to do this is to rename /usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11
to something like /usr/X11R6-Apple and /etc/X11-Apple. Then install
XFree86 4.4.0. Then if you ever need to switch back you can rename
/usr/X11R6 and /etc/X11 to something like /usr/X11R6-XFree86 and
/etc/X11-XFree86 and rename the *-Apple versions. You can also do the
same thing with softlinks. Some people have written scripts to do
this easily.
And can XDarwin use the quartz-wm?
Yes. You need to copy /usr/X11R6-Apple/bin/quartz-wm to
/usr/X11R6/bin. You should also copy Xquartz if you want to take a
stab at running X11.app with XFree86 4.4.0 libraries.
Of course, the easiest way is simply to install XFree86 4.4.0 on top
of your Apple installation. Xquartz, X11.app, and quartz-wm will not
get overridden by XFree86's installer. If you ever need to revert to
the pure Apple stuff, just rerun the Apple X11 installer. This makes
it hard to switch and forth, but easy to upgrade once.
What will work:
- You can run quartz-wm with XDarwin.app. You just have to modify
your .xinitrc file to start quartz-wm. It uses twm by default.
What may work:
- You may be able to run X11.app with XFree86 4.4.0 installed. (Let
me know if anyone does this.)
What probably won't work:
- You probably won't be able to run XDarwin.app using the old files
in Apple's version of /usr/X11R6.
What definitely won't work:
- XFree86 4.3.0 won't even start on Panther. You need to use XFree86
4.4.0 for all of this.
Hope that clears things up. :-)
