Hmm, seems like it's better to do that in a wrapper script for IDL.
That is, write a script called idl_wrapper.sh that looks like this:
#!/bin/bash
xmodmap -e 'keycode 66 = Alt_L'
/usr/local/RSI/bin/idl $*
# might need to "unxmodmap" here?
exit 0
Put the script in /usr/local/bin, and do
ln -s /usr/local/bin/idl /usr/local/bin/idl_wrapper.sh
This should put idl in your path and do the xmodmap only when you need
it.

I should mention that on my Powerbook, I get the exact behavior you

do use the option key, it works fine, and I have done nothing to my

OK, now we are getting to the nitty gritty. I *do* have something
that has been xmodmap'd -- the option key, viz.
xmodmap -e 'keycode 66 = Alt_L'
in my csh.cshrc file. This allows me to use left-option as ALT in
idlde, the IDL development environment, from X11. So I am guessing
now that I will have to map another unused key to emulate
option-click, Rich.
Just curious: can I xmodmap keys to emulate a left-, right- end
middle-mouse click, being as how I do not use a mouse with my
Powerbook.
