Yes you can, if you know what the actual program is called. Have a
look in the dtsession files on the AIX box, which might give you some
clues. Personally, I manage my files with the command line.

that's it.
Yup. Or you can do what I do and dispense with xterm as well, and use
Terminal.app. I prefer it to xterm anyway. As long as your .bashrc
sets your DISPLAY variable correctly, any X clients you start from a
Terminal window will work fine.
Most of the time my X server is completely invisible - it's only when I
run the occasional emacs on another machine that I even notice it's
there!
